Why 100% Cotton Should Be Your First Sustainable Wardrobe Swap

Your sustainable wardrobe starts underneath.
Underwear is probably the most overlooked part of our wardrobe.
We wear it every day, for hours at a time, and it sits directly against our skin. Yet we're often more careful about the material of a sweater than the material of the underwear underneath it.
I decided to change mine and started choosing 100% cotton underwear wherever possible.
The difference was surprisingly noticeable. It felt lighter, more comfortable and simply more natural against my skin. Personally, I also noticed that my skin felt better. That experience made me start looking differently at the rest of my wardrobe.
If we're trying to make more conscious fashion choices, why not begin with the pieces we wear closest to our bodies?
Why choose cotton underwear?
Cotton is naturally breathable, soft and comfortable, which makes it a practical material for everyday underwear.
When shopping, look beyond the appearance and check the composition label. You'll often find underwear made from blends containing polyester, polyamide or elastane.
That doesn't automatically make a garment “bad” — but if your goal is to introduce more natural fabrics into your wardrobe, 100% cotton is an easy place to begin.
You can start small: replace your underwear gradually as your old pieces wear out rather than buying an entirely new wardrobe overnight.
I use the set from H&M – 10 pack cotton tangas .
Then change what you sleep in
Once I started paying attention to what I was wearing underneath my clothes, the next question was obvious:
What am I wearing for eight hours while I sleep?Your pajamas are another piece that spends hours against your skin. This is where I love the idea of building a wardrobe that feels good rather than simply looks good.
Think soft cotton, linen and other breathable natural fibres. A beautiful pajama set made from a natural material can feel completely different from sleeping in synthetic fabrics.
And honestly, your pajamas don't have to look boring just because they're comfortable.
A beautiful cotton pajama set can be elegant, minimal and effortlessly chic — exactly the kind of everyday luxury that makes staying at home feel a little more special.I can recommend the TK Maxx cotton pajamas from CK and by Louise.
Your bed is part of your wardrobe too
This is where the idea goes beyond fashion.
Your bedsheets and pillowcases are essentially another layer of fabric surrounding your body for hours every night.
So why stop at your pajamas?
Cotton and linen bedding can be a beautiful way to bring more natural fibres into your everyday life.
Start with your sheets. Then change your pillowcases. You don't need to replace everything at once.
I particularly love bedding in natural, understated colours — warm white, cream, beige, soft grey, muted brown. They create that effortless, calm feeling that never really goes out of style.
Here's the thing about sustainable fashion that often gets lost:
You don't need to be perfect.
You don't need to own a wardrobe made entirely from organic materials.
You don't need to throw away every polyester dress you already own.
And you definitely don't need to buy new things just because they're labelled “sustainable.”
The most sustainable piece in your wardrobe is often the one you already own and continue to wear.
Instead, start making different decisions when you actually need something new.
Read the label.
Feel the fabric.
Look at the composition.
Ask yourself whether you'll still want to wear it in three years. And slowly, your wardrobe begins to change.
From underwear to your entire wardrobe
Once you start looking at materials, you begin to notice them everywhere.
You start seeing the difference between a beautiful wool coat and a polyester one.
You start appreciating linen in summer.
You start looking for cotton instead of automatically buying another synthetic T-shirt.
You begin to understand why certain fabrics feel better against your skin.
And eventually, you stop shopping only for what looks good on the hanger.
You start shopping for how something feels, how it is made and how long you want it to stay in your life.
That, to me, is what a more conscious wardrobe is really about. Not having less for the sake of having less. Having better things that you actually want to wear.

Start with 100% cotton
You don't have to change your whole life tomorrow.
Start with one drawer. Your underwear drawer. Replace a few pieces with 100% cotton.
Then look at your pajamas.
Then your bedsheets.
Then your pillowcases.
And eventually, when you're shopping for your next piece of clothing, check the fabric before you check out. A more natural, more conscious wardrobe doesn't have to begin with a dramatic transformation. It can begin with something as simple as choosing what touches your skin.
