Ladies, Let’s Bring the Hat Back: The Pillbox Revival for Fall 2026

For Fall 2026, the hat is back in the conversation — and the pillbox is leading the way.
The small, structured, brimless hat once associated with Jackie Kennedy and the polished elegance of the 1950s and ’60s has been reinterpreted for a new generation. Pillbox hats have appeared in Copenhagen street style and across Fall 2026 fashion coverage, alongside a broader return to expressive, character-filled accessories.
And I have to say: I’m very happy about it.
Because a hat can do something very few accessories can.
It can change the entire mood of an outfit.
Why Are We Suddenly Talking About Hats Again?
Fashion has a funny way of bringing back things we thought we'd left behind.
The pillbox is one of those pieces.
Its history is deeply connected to the polished femininity of the mid-20th century. Jackie Kennedy famously made the pillbox hat part of her signature look, helping turn the small, structured shape into one of the defining accessories of the era.
But the current revival isn't about recreating that look exactly.
That's the important part.
Fashion in 2026 is taking the idea of the pillbox and mixing it with completely different wardrobes. Current street-style and trend coverage shows pillboxes in neutral colours, animal prints and embellished versions, while designers are pairing structured headwear with modern silhouettes.
In other words, you don't need pearls, gloves and a matching skirt suit.
You can wear the hat with jeans.
You can wear it with a leather jacket.
You can wear it with sneakers.
And somehow, that might be even more interesting.
Elegance Doesn't Have to Mean Formal
This is where I think the pillbox becomes particularly interesting.
Because yes, it can look incredibly ladylike.
Imagine a chocolate-brown wool pillbox with a long camel coat, a knit dress and elegant boots.
Beautiful.
But now imagine exactly the same hat with straight-leg jeans, an oversized leather jacket and sneakers.
Completely different.
And much more unexpected.
That contrast is what makes the trend feel modern.
Rather than dressing from head to toe in one aesthetic, we can let the hat introduce a little elegance into an otherwise casual outfit.
Think of it as the fashion equivalent of adding lipstick to a very simple outfit.
It doesn't have to match everything.
In fact, I think it's better when it doesn't.
The Pillbox Formula: One Hat, Three Different Personalities
01. The Ladylike Look
Start with the classic version.
A structured coat. A midi skirt or knit dress. A pair of elegant boots. Maybe a small handbag and understated jewellery.
Add a pillbox and suddenly the whole outfit feels beautifully composed.
This is the version that feels closest to the original spirit of the hat — polished, feminine and quietly glamorous.
The trick: keep the colour palette restrained. Camel, chocolate, cream, navy, burgundy and black all work beautifully for autumn.
02. The Casual Remix
Now forget everything you know about how you're “supposed” to wear a pillbox.
Put it with straight-leg denim.
Add a white T-shirt, an oversized leather jacket and sneakers.
That's it.
The contrast is what makes the outfit work. The hat brings elegance; the denim and sneakers bring ease.
Instead of looking overly dressed, you look intentional.
The trick: don't over-accessorise. Let the hat be the unexpected element.
03. The Modern Minimalist
This one might be my favourite.
Wide-leg trousers. A simple fitted knit. Pointed boots.
Then add a sculptural hat in a soft neutral shade.
Very little is happening — and somehow that makes the hat even more noticeable.
The trick: think about proportions. A compact hat can look particularly striking against oversized tailoring.

For anyone who wants a little more colour, the Scarlett comes in a rich red wool version.
And honestly, this is exactly where I would stop being cautious.
Wear it with a chocolate-brown coat. Or navy tailoring. Or even a very simple black outfit.
The hat doesn't need to match the outfit perfectly.
It just needs to have a point of view.
Don't Save the Hat for a Special Occasion
Maybe that's the biggest shift we need to make.
We've somehow decided that hats belong to weddings, horse races, garden parties and photographs from another decade.
But why?
Fashion is much more interesting when we take something traditionally “special” and make it part of everyday life.
Wear the pillbox to coffee.
Wear it with jeans.
Wear it on a Tuesday.
Wear it when your outfit feels boring and you want to change the entire mood without changing your clothes.
Because sometimes the easiest way to make an outfit feel new isn't buying another pair of trousers or another sweater.
It's putting something on your head.
